US fire apparatus

Peter Pirsch & Sons, Peterbilt 359

The history of fire apparatus builder Peter Pirsch & Sons, plus tips for building a Peterbilt 359 pumper in 1:25 scale.

The company was founded in 1900 in Kenosha in the US state of Wisconsin. Peter Pirsch only began producing fire apparatus in 1926. The brand name was Peter Pirsch. Andrew Sale, the founder's great-grandson, ran the company from 1978. Around 1981 about 100 vehicles a year are recorded. Production of fire apparatus ended in 1988. This Peterbilt 359 is just one example of what Pirsch built.

If you are interested in building this pumper as a model, you will find some original photos of the vehicle in the archive. The owner at the time was the Auburn Fire Department in the US state of Alabama, which received three identical Peterbilts in 1981. The Revell Peterbilt kit is well suited for building a model in 1:25; the fire truck and the tow truck of Stepps Towing Service were also built from it.
