Box Trailer

From the Revell Kenworth W900, the box trailer led to further rigs, from the Thurn und Taxis truck to the road train.

Which Revell model still in the range could be modified or extended with extra parts? Simple: the Kenworth W900 tractor unit. The Thurn und Taxis brewery in Regensburg owned just such a tractor with a matching box trailer, a closed semi-trailer which we call a "Koffer-Auflieger" here in Germany.

In 1992 I photographed and measured the rig in the brewery's yard. I then made the technical drawings of the trailer, which went to Heljan in Denmark together with the photos. This combination was delivered as a kit in 1993/94.

The box trailer found another use with the Westernstar tractor unit from Italeri. Although the tractor was in 1:24 scale, the trailer fitted it, because I had designed the semi-trailer so that its dimensions worked in both 1:25 and 1:24. For that I chose the golden mean: not quite 1:25 and not quite 1:24, but exactly in between. Some of you have surely built this Sortimo rig already; it also came onto the market in 1993/94.

But that was not all. A road train trailer was still needed. When designing this semi-trailer I had already allowed for such a variant, meaning the fitting of a third axle and a tow coupling at the rear. I would have liked a refrigeration unit for this model too, but Revell did not want to spend any money on it. I did get to develop the necessary dolly, though, as it is part of any road train you want to build.
